Parking in Lisbon can be challenging – narrow streets, lots of cars and varying parking regulations. However, thanks to emel, the city's official parking management company, there are clear structures in place and the ePark app makes parking much easier and more flexible.


What is emel?

Emel is Lisbon's municipal parking management company. It monitors, organises and manages parking spaces in public areas. Its aim is to reduce traffic congestion, secure parking spaces for residents and, at the same time, allow visitors to park flexibly.

Emel has divided Lisbon into different parking zones with colour markings:

  • Green: Long-term parking, often cheaper, usually on the outskirts of town

  • Yellow: Average length of stay, usually up to 4 hours

  • Red: Short-term parking in central locations, more expensive, usually max. 2 hours

  • Brown: Short-term parking, up to 2 hours

  • Resident zones: Special permit for residents

ePark – Parking via smartphone

The free emel ePark app makes parking much easier. It offers:

  1. Search for parking spaces nearby

  2. Digital payment by credit card, direct debit or PayPal

  3. Display of remaining parking time

  4. Extension of parking time without having to return to the car

Using the app – step by step

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play

  2. Register with your email address and vehicle details

  3. Top up the app with money

  4. Select a parking space based on location or address

  5. Set your parking time and pay

  6. Use the extension option if required
